  Music Circle

We meet in members’ homes, at 2 o’clock on the first Thursday in the month, and we would welcome new members  - a very pleasant friendly way to spend an afternoon. We are aiming to enjoy, and hopefully understand a little more, a wide range of music; this has included so far Classical, Jazz, Opera, Light Music, and Christmas Carols; some programmes have been based on a composer, others on a musical instrument, some on a musical period, while others have been chosen freely by one member.

The Music Circle

It seems an age since our research of Christmas carols at the beginning of December. This proved to be very interesting and enjoyable---even if we weren’t brave enough to sing the carols---perhaps next Christmas?

In January Kay gave us a fascinating in-depth talk on the violin, starting with a brief description of her violin and bow---how they were made and a little about the origins and history of the instrument. Then using some of our newly acquired equipment we watched and listened to a wide range of violin music; from Paganini to Nigel Kennedy and including jazz and folk music as well as classical.

There was even a piece of music played on an electric violin, which I for one didn’t know existed! But that’s U3A for you--- new experiences as well as old!

Dorothy Shipperlee

At the February Meeting a wide choice on the theme of Landscape brought some interesting music, although some presented their choice “because they liked it”.

Smetana’s Vltava reminded Marion of a special river boat trip. “Night on Bald Mountain” a good choice in view of our present long cold winter. Daybreak from Delius’ ” Florida Suite” really did conjure up a “sunrise” on a hot tropical morning. Needless to say Beethoven’s Pastoral and Mendelssohn’s “Fingal’s Cave” were enjoyed by all.
