Music Circle
We meet in members’ homes, at 2
o’clock on the first Thursday in the month, and we would welcome new
members to start with us in the autumn - a very pleasant friendly way
to spend an afternoon. We are aiming to enjoy, and hopefully
understand a little more, a wide range of music; this has included so
far Classical, Jazz, Opera, Light Music, and Christmas Carols; some
programmes have been based on a composer, others on a musical
instrument, some on a musical period, while others have been chosen
freely by one member.

MUSIC PROGRAMME
MUSIC CIRCLE
2010 January to May.
We have had two meetings since August; the Music
planned for October being postponed until next year. In September
Terry Legg opened the door of his CD cabinet and out poured an
eclectic pot-puree of music under our “Private Passions” series. He
took us from Hummel’s Violin Concerto to some of the Enigma Variations
by way of The Royal Marines( Life on the Ocean Waves) and Syd
Lawrence. Also appearing were the star performers Kyung Wha Chung(
Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1), Callas and the gentle strains of
Julian Bream (Mallorca by Albeniz).
With the first Thursday in November falling on the
fifth we took the risk of basing our “Members choice” on Percussion.
The fact that drums came into the western musical instrument array via
the military association from the Middle East started an interesting
and varied afternoon with a brass band. The final very appropriate
item from Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks was preceded by an
18th. Century concerto by Johann Wilhelm Hertel featuring 8 Kettle
drums, an Indian Ragg Solo on Tabla, rhythmic Scott Joplin pieces and
Steve Reich’s Nygoya Marimbas. We found , as we have done so often in
the past, that subjects, like Percussion, which initially sound rather
foreboding, cause us to look into the subject in more depth and
interesting and enjoyable programme results.
We still have space for a few new members.
