Sussex U3A Region

  Sussex U3A Region

Arun Valley U3A Representative: Peter Bassett

Sussex U3A Regional Association (SURA)

For the average member of the U3A, the most significant aspect of SURA is the opportunity it provides for the 30+ U3A's in East and West Sussex to band together to hire a hall, find a speaker and hold a study day Increasingly there is involvement with the Universities and other organisations with active education departments and almost without exception these days provide good value for money, both in the quality of the speaker and as a day out with like-minded people. SURA and the South East regional Network of the U3A also run its own summer school at Chichester University.

Each local U3A has its own representative on SURA. I represent Arun Valley and my most important role is to receive and circulate details for forthcoming Study Days and courses. Because monthly meetings do not appear to be in favour with our U3A, and because the Newsletter only appears three times a year, there is some difficulty in getting information round to interested members. Study days are popular and I do feel the need to get the information round to you quickly. The easiest way to do this is via email giving a short list of available forthcoming events, although if you do not use internet we can post this to you. The Arun Valley U3A does of course have to pay the postage.

SURA Network Day

Five Arun Valley members went to the recent SURA Network Day on Sussex Rural Life in Words and Song. Chris Hare, well known author of many books on Sussex, spoke of rural Sussex before the 1st World War with descriptions, readings and renditions of traditional Sussex songs.

The programme covered customs, dialect and songs of labouring people. The afternoon covered songs of love and diversion and from Downs to Towns and the urbanisation of Sussex. There were readings from Sussex writers and Chris, his wife Ann and their friend Emily sang Sussex folk songs giving further dimension to this delightful and interesting day.

The Study Days are always well presented and are much recommended to those of you who have not yet “taken the plunge”.
